It was during Eisenhower's presidency that the United States and the Soviet Union entered the space race. The USSR initiated the race. Eisenhower, not wanting the exploration of space to have military implications, initially stayed out of the race. Eventually, he abandoned this policy, and allowed a modified military sounding rocket to launch the first American satellite, thus entering the US into the space race.
